What Should Real Estate Mentorship Look Like at a Brokerage?

Good mentorship at a real estate brokerage comes down to four things: a mentor you can actually call when a question comes up, a chance to ride along on a listing appointment or a tough showing before you run one yourself, regular one-on-one time to talk through your real deals, and live coaching where you can practice out loud. Before you join any brokerage, ask the broker to show you how each of those works, with names and a schedule.

Almost every recruiting page says “mentorship.” The word is easy to type. What counts is what happens when your buyer’s inspection report comes back ugly, the sellers are upset and you aren’t sure what to say next. Either someone picks up the phone and walks you through it, or you figure it out alone.

What does real mentorship at a brokerage include?

  • A mentor to call. One person, by name, who knows you and answers when you are stuck. Not a general inbox.
  • Ride-alongs. You watch how a listing appointment or a tough showing is handled before you handle one yourself. Seeing it done is worth more than reading about it.
  • One-on-one time. Regular time to look at your actual deals, your pipeline and your week, and to plan the next step.
  • Live coaching. A place to practice scripts, role play hard conversations and get straight feedback before it counts.

Online lessons help too, but they do the most good alongside these things, not in place of them.

Why does mentorship matter so much for new agents?

Your license tells the state you know the rules. It doesn’t teach you how to run a showing, explain a contract to a nervous buyer or ask for a listing. Most of that is learned by watching someone do it, trying it and getting feedback. A good mentor shortens that loop, so mistakes get caught before they reach a client.

It also helps with the quiet part of year one, when you are doing the right things and nothing has closed yet. Having someone check in keeps you moving. Our first 90 days plan lays out what those early weeks can look like.

Do experienced agents need mentorship too?

Yes, though it looks different. An experienced agent doesn’t need someone to explain a purchase agreement. What helps is a sounding board on a tricky price, a second opinion before a hard negotiation and coaching that sharpens what already works. The right kind of support gives you more room to run your business, not less.

How can you tell if a brokerage’s mentorship is real?

Ask specific questions and listen for specific answers:

  1. Who will my mentor be, and can I meet them before I sign?
  2. How often will we meet one on one, and what do we cover?
  3. Can I ride along on a listing appointment or a tough showing before I run my own?
  4. When is live coaching, and what happens in a session?
  5. Can I talk with an agent who joined in the last year about how it went?

If the answers stay vague, the mentorship probably is too. For more questions worth asking, read our post on what to ask a broker before you join.

How does mentorship work at Realest.com?

At Realest.com, new agents get a mentor and ride-alongs on listing appointments or tough showings. Agents also get one-on-one time with Sash and Andrew plus live coaching, and they can use the Fearless Agents training for lessons and scripts between sessions.

The reason behind it is in our mission statement. We aim to run our business with humility and integrity and to put the needs of our clients, partners and community ahead of our own. It is inspired by Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Mentorship is one of the plainest ways to live that out. A good mentor spends time on someone else’s success, and the agent who learns that way tends to treat clients the same way.

A ride-along is when a newer agent goes with a more experienced agent to a listing appointment or showing to watch how it is handled before running one on their own.
